Completing the Fourth Quarter Remotely

March 26, 2020

Dear STM Community:

First and foremost, we hope each of our students and his families are healthy and safe during these adverse circumstances. With that being said, due to the ongoing restrictions in state of Connecticut and the uncertainty going forward, we have made the difficult decision to complete the academic year remotely instead of bringing students back to campus this spring.

This decision was not made easily. Our Board of Trustees and school administration have carefully evaluated recommendations from the Connecticut Department of Health, the Center for Disease Control, our local health department, and our fellow Connecticut boarding schools.  It has become increasingly clear that this is the most responsible decision for the safety of our students. We recognize how unfortunate this is, as finishing the spring at St. Thomas More is both fulfilling and rewarding to our students and faculty.

This change, however, will bring new and exciting challenges as we prepare to finish the school year remotely. We all look forward to embracing the opportunity to educate our students through distance learning.

We must keep in mind that we will get through this unusual experience, and that we will ultimately grow stronger in ways we would not have imagined at the start of the school year.

Please note the following:

All School project: We have emailed a project that will begin Monday, March 30 and end April, 10.  Advisors will reach out to their advisees and be responsible for monitoring the completion of this project.

Start of formal classes: Teachers and students will begin distance learning for their individual courses on Monday, April 13. More to come regarding distance learning and please be aware we will send things prior to April 13, to ensure students can access the lessons.

Visiting campus prohibited: Please recognize that campus does remain closed and students will not be allowed to return to campus until the state of CT ends its current restrictions.  We will send information on next steps regarding student’s possessions on campus.

College counseling: Mr. Taylor Mulvey ( will be in constant contact with you regarding transcripts and any additional items needed to complete your college enrollment.

Graduation: At this point we are uncertain about hosting a graduation this May but we will continue to monitor the situation and will provide something for our graduating seniors.

Spring Sports. Interscholastic competition in our SENE league is cancelled. We will be monitoring the situation and be in touch if anything changes.  Staying in shape, healthy and safe is the priority of all students so we will be sending suggestions for staying fit at home.  We will continue to monitor and evaluate any safe opportunities that may allow us to work with our spring athletes.

SAT/ACT/TOEFL tests: In response to COVID-19, both the SAT and ACT organizations have cancelled March, April, and May exams.  The next scheduled SAT is June 6. The next ACT is June 13, 2020. Check with those organizations online for specific information.

Thank you for your continued support, your patience, and your flexibility as we continue to chart the path forward for the remainder of this academic year.

Your family and loved ones are in our thoughts and prayers.
