English Language Institute

  • The English Language Institute is an immersion program for students entering grades 7-11 who are interested in rapidly advancing their English language skills. The program integrates with either our Learn2Learn or Academic Camp - Accelerate programs and is designed around each student’s baseline evaluation upon arrival. Appropriate placement is scheduled in groups of six students or fewer per teacher. With its content based curriculum, students will not only improve their general knowledge of the English language, but will be exposed to the specialized language and academic vocabulary in the areas of literature, science, social studies, the arts, and mathematics. Students with more advanced language skills may be enrolled in our “Academic Camp-Accelerate” program or in a hybrid program.

ELI students will participate fully in all the summer activities that summer@STM students enjoy (instruction in one sport, selection of a mini-course, waterfront activities, field trips, and the “College Experience” seminar) and experience residential dorm living with friends from all over the United States and the world.

Sport and Mini-Course options:  Soccer, Basketball, Lacrosse, Directorial Debut, Radio Controlled Fun, A Pond, a Lake, and an Ocean (an e-science journey), CPR/First Aid (available to Academic Camp students).

    Daily Schedule

Our daily schedule is similar across each program and is designed to get the students into a positive routine.  The day begins with breakfast, then four class periods from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by lunch. Immediately following lunch, there is an all school meeting to prepare for the afternoon's activities and specific schedule.

Activities will include formal athletic instruction, competitive intramural activities (including beach volleyball, soccer, ultimate Frisbee and kickball), each student's chosen mini-course and traditional waterfront activities (swimming, fishing, tubing, sailing, canoeing, kayaking or relaxing on the beach.)

Before and after dinner, the students have free time or organized intramural competition. Sunday through Friday, there are teacher supervised study halls beginning at 7:30 p.m. tailored to the specific summer program a student is enrolled in.  Lights out is at 9:45 p.m. for our middle school students and 10:30 p.m. for our high school participants.  Lights out is slightly later on Friday and Saturday nights. On Friday night and often other nights, students and staff will gather around the fire pit to relax, enjoy s'mores and other pre-bedtime snacks.

Field Trips, Off-Campus Activities and the College Experience

Field trips are taken frequently during the five weeks. Every Wednesday after lunch campers go by bus to one of the nearby attractions. In the past, these field trips have included Ocean Beach, go-carting, bowling, laser tag, ice skating, local museums, and the Mystic Aquarium. On Sundays there are full-day trips to a range of events and activities including Six Flags New England and other amusement parks, Boston and/or New York City, New England Revolution soccer games and Whale Watches.

The College Experience will introduce students to the college selection and application process.  In addition to visiting a number of well-known colleges and universities in New England with campus tours and admissions presentations by student admissions ambassadors, the program will offer weekly topics of importance to the process.  Writing the college essay, the importance and science of multiple "touches" to show interest, basic research strategies to develop your "list" and creating and sticking to a schedule are among the topics discussed.

    Facilities

Summer@STM is located on the campus of St. Thomas More School and has full use of the facilities. Summer classes are held in air conditioned classrooms.  Additionally, students will use additional facilities that may include science, language and computer labs and the library when needed. Three modern dormitories provide housing and all students share double rooms. Teachers and counselors live in the dorms to provide 24/7 supervision.

The school's 100 acre campus enjoys 4,000 feet of waterfront on Gardner Lake. The boathouse holds kayaks, canoes, sailboats and rowboats for recreational use. Many campers enjoy the high-quality fishing in the lake that is stocked annually. Recreational facilities include a gymnasium with a basketball court and a twenty-station weight room equipped with Nautilus machines and free weights. The gym also contains the student lounge with ping-pong, pool tables and flat screen TV.  Other outdoor facilities include six basketball courts, four tennis courts, soccer and lacrosse fields, a track and two baseball diamonds.

    Staff

Typically 60-70% of the staff is drawn from the St. Thomas More School faculty. Every teacher holds a bachelor's degree and many hold advanced degrees. The low student-to-faculty ratio ensures each student receives the attention necessary to stay on track and achieve his goals for the summer. In addition, the summer staff includes summer counselors, typically recent college graduates or current college students, and a nurse.  Our dining hall is managed by Sage Dining Services.

    Medical Care

The School Nurse is available during regular office hours from Monday to Saturday. The summer program is supported by an on-call nurse when the office is closed. The school physician is available as needed. Close proximity to Backus Hospital in Norwich ensures that all routine and emergency medical needs are met.

    Spiritual Life

St. Thomas More School is Catholic in philosophy.  Our summer program welcomes students of all faiths and creeds.
