Mr. Kearney's Biology Class Takes Field Trip
This week, Biology students explored the characteristics of amphibians. On Monday, each class visited ponds located on Campus and observed freshly-spawned frog eggs, as well as frogs themselves.

Annual Spelling Bee Renamed

An October tradition on campus has taken on a new dimension. Several years ago, the late Richard T. Schnaidt began holding a spelling bee for students prior to the Columbus Day weekend. This year, Headmaster James F. Hanrahan, Jr. ’72 declared the event “The Richard T. Schnaidt Memorial Spelling Bee,” in honor of Mr. Schnaidt, who formerly chaired the English Department.

The Loss of a
Beloved Faculty Member
June 25, 2009
Montville - Richard T. Schnaidt of Oakdale, beloved husband of Sheryl (Carney) Schnaidt, died unexpectedly June 25, 2009.
He was born April 18, 1948, the son of the late Richard and Helen (Nolan) Schnaidt. He graduated from Boston College and received his master's degree from Eastern Connecticut State University. He was employed as the English department chair at St. Thomas More School in Oakdale for 26 years.
He is survived by his son, William Schnaidt of Connecticut; his brothers, Dan Schnaidt of Connecticut and Tom Schnaidt of New York; sisters, Kathy Christiana of New York, Susan Bright of New Jersey, and Patricia Kirkpatrick of California; and many other loving family members and friends.
There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 27, 2009, at Our Lady's Chapel on the campus of St. Thomas More School. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memoriam may be made to St. Thomas More School, 45 Cottage Road, Oakdale, CT 06370.

A few passing showers did not deter the STM faithful from coming out for the Ninth Annual Golf Classic. Thank you to all of our generous sponsors and enthusiastic participants. This year's Golf Classic at River Ridge Golf Course was a success. The winning foursome included Bob Bugbee, John Elliott, Shayne McAvoy and Dr. Ravi Prakash. Coming in a very close second were past champions Headmaster Jamie Hanrahan '72, Jeff Hanley, Sr., Jeff Hanley, Jr. and Tim Ashburner. The third place foursome included STM's Jere Quinn, Tim Riordan '79, Emmett Riley and Tom Alquist. Joe Daly '66 won the longest drive, and Ryan Taranto '05 was closest to the pin.
Thanks to the alumni who showed their support for the event. Those present included Hugh Casey '97, Alex Casey '08, Nick Conti '00, Tim Pavidis '00, Jason Bugbee '01, Ryan Taranto '05, and golf committee members Joe Daly '66 and Bob Malerba '66. 18-holes of golf, a full reception and some great raffle prizes were all part of the fun. All proceeds of the event directly benefit the St. Thomas More School Chancellor's Fund.

Mr. Gerowitz's Biology class is completing a Mammalian Dissection Lab. Each team of three students are dissecting a cow's eye, sheep's brain, pig's heart, and pig's kidney to observe the inner structures and how each system works.

On Wednesday, May 6, 2009 STM's Awards Day 2009 was held. Among the awards handed out, Bryan Phillapon was named the RA of the Year, Jake Lyons and Scott Delaney received the Student Appreciation Awards, Jim & Lisa Lyons earned the Community Appreciation Award and Mr. Jon Hastings was given the Faculty Appreciation Award.
