04/05/12

Coaches Ladd and Johnson are very optimistic for the upcoming season.  Coach Ladd said the team could be the “best JV team since I’ve been here.”  The infield defense is expected to be a team strength given the combined speed and glove work provided by Roger Luo, Aiden Cummings, Daniel Li, Hyo Kyun Yoo and Jack Boyle.  Coach Johnson described Jack as a player who “really understands the game.”  Matheus Sousa figures to patrol centerfield with Prosper Jeanphilippe, Wei-Hao Chiang and Luis Lee-Perez all vying for playing time.  The Chancellors open the season is home on April 19 at 3:30 vs. Grove School.

STM Lacrosse 8, Falmouth 7

05/11/12

The Lacrosse Team had an 8-7 come from behind win Wednesday afternoon.  The victory locked up a playoff berth for the team.  Trailing 5-3 at halftime the team was able to regroup and overcome both the play of the visitors and elements for the exciting win.  Oleg Deyle (4 goals), Carmine Totillo (3 goals), Joey Posillico (4 assists) and Tristan Peacock (goal) led the charge offensively.  However, in the final quarter it was play of the defense specifically that of goal keeper Karl Manhardt, that made all of the difference.  “He stopped everything that was thrown at him,” according to Coach Savioli.  The Chancellors play at Williams on Friday.

Hyde-Woodstock 19, STM Lacrosse 5

05/09/12

Yesterday the Lacrosse Team hosted top ranked Hyde-Woodstock and fell 19-5.  Hyde, who came ready to play right from the first whistle, took control of the game in the first five minutes taking a commanding lead of 6-0. There was no let up by the team from Woodstock, as they continued to pour it on and went into the 1st quarter break with a 9-0 lead.  Oleg Deyle (3 G) and Joe Posillico (1 G) did their best to make the game competitive each scoring in the second but Hyde's high powered offense always had an answer to anything the Chancellors could offer.  Tristan Peacock had the final Chancellor tally of the day.  It was a hard fought battle until the end but the Chancellors slow start, yet again, proved to be too much to overcome.  The Chancellors play host to Falmouth on Wednesday at 3:30.

Lacrosse 13, St. Andrews 2

05/07/12

The St. Thomas More Lacrosse Team defeated St. Andrews 13-2 on Friday afternoon.  Karl Manhardt and Dan Gauthier led a stellar defense that held a shutout until there were nine minutes left in the game. According to Coach Savioli, Oleg Deyle, who led the team in scoring, “had a great game on offense and defense shutting down their biggest offensive threat.”  The play of attack men Jack Stephenson, George Hanson and Joe Posillico did a great job controlling the momentum of the game.  The highlight of the day was Juwon Grant scoring his first career goal on a setup from Tristan Peacock.  The victory pushed the team’s record over .500 at 4-3.  On Monday the Chancellors’ play host to Hyde at 4:00.

STM Lacrosse 10, Masters 4

05/01/12

On Monday afternoon the Lacrosse Team evened its record at 3-3 with a 10-4 victory over Masters.  The Chancellors rallied from an early 2-0 deficit for the victory.  Strong defensive play, led John Cianci and Michaelangelo Federici, along with the physical presence of Alec Burgess (goal) ignited the comeback.  On the offensive side, George Hansen led the way with a strong overall game as him contributed four goals.  Carmine Totillo (3 assists), Tristan Peacock (2 goals, assist), Oleg Deyle (2 goals) and Joe Posillico (goal, assist) provided the rest of the scoring.  Wednesday’s matchup with Falmouth has been postponed and is tentatively scheduled for Saturday at 2:30.  Please check the website later in the week.  The Chancellors do play host to St. Andrews Friday at 3:30.

Alumni 23, Varsity 3

04/30/12

On Saturday, April 28, 2012, the Chancellors lacrosse team held its annual Alumni Lacrosse game. The Alumni again came out on top with stellar play from all who attended. The young Chancellor team had a wonderful opportunity to connect with Alumni old and new. "This is a wonderful opportunity for our young men to connect with alumni who were in the same position not too long ago. We as alumni look forward to this day each year. I think the kids do as well," said Coach Alex Savioli Class of 2003. It was a wonderful turn out and we thank all who were able to attend.

Lacrosse Season Preview

03/23/12

Coaches Savioli, Hastings, Winking and volunteer assistant (and alum) Kiernan Daly are very optimistic heading into the 2012 Season.  They have been pleased with the work ethic, team work and leadership early on.  Captains Dan Gauthier, Oleg Deyle, Karl Manhardt and Carmine Totillo have established themselves as leaders early on.  They all understand the expectations of the coaches and have provided support for some of the younger, less experienced players.  Regan Delancey’s positive attitude and experience will play a significant role on the team.  The coaches have high expectations of Alek Burgess and Tristan Peacock.  The staff has also been particularly impressed with Bradford Thompson’s ability to pick up the long stick, Jack Stephenson’s raw skills and the speed of Carmine Totillo.  The Chancellors Opener is on Wednesday, March 28 at 4:00 vs. Chase Collegiate.  See you there.

Varsity Tennis Season Preview

 04/02/12

Coach Rodgers has high hopes for the upcoming season.  He cited the mild spring weather as being a major benefit over last year.  The team has had time to work out the elements of the game, such as placement and consistency.  The time outside along with a large turnout for tennis this year has made a tremendous difference for the workouts.  Captain, Brad Wang, has set the tone as a team leader throughout the early season.  It appears that Dongwook Yoon will be playing first singles, followed by Brad Wang, Victor Wu and Will Ruddy.  The doubles pairings will likely be Yifang Chen with Zihui Zhang as first doubles and the second doubles will be Tevin Ayebare and Dan Guglielmello.  The Season Opener is at home April 16 at 4:00 vs. Williams School.

Track Season Preview

04/03/12

Coaches Riggs and Allen see some potential for this year's track team. While the numbers are not particularly large, there is the possibility of some new school records being set. The staff feels that Denzel Washington has realistic chances of setting records in the high jump, long jump and triple jump. While new to the sport, the coaches also see similar potential for Sami Ahmed in the mile and two mile. Sprinters Reggie Gaunichaux, Tyler Girard-Floyd, JA'mhar Comena, and Qadeer Morgan should be a threat each meet. There is also potential for Jacob Bulger in the discus. The team opens the season April 25 at Cheshire at 2:45.

JV Basketball Season Wrap-Up

03/19/12

By Coach Leavens and Coach P. Quinn

The JV basketball team had a strong season. Although the team lost five out of their first six games they quickly turned it around and went on to win four out of their next five games. From there the team finished the season strong, winning four of their last six games. The Chancellors finished the season with a record of 9 wins and 8 losses, with only two of the losses by more than 10 points. Our JV team was competitive in every match.

In the second game of the season the Chancellors avenged a loss two weeks earlier to a strong Masters School team. St. Thomas More withstood thirty second half points from the Masters shooting guard, including a last second missed three pointer, to win in overtime. In our first of three classic match-ups against the dreaded Fishers Island Vikings, St. Thomas More fell on a buzzer beating three-point field goal. In the very next game the Chancellors missed their own buzzer beating opportunity to fall to the Wheeler School by one point on the road. Later in the season, St. Thomas More evened the score at home with a thrilling overtime victory over the same strong Wheel squad. The JV team also lost a tough last second game to the Hyde School on the road, however, they played their best game of the season holding Hyde to thirty points when they came to Oakdale. To close out the season, St. Thomas More fell to Fisher's Island School in the championship game of the Fisher's Island Invitational Tournament. Shooting guard Steven Greenslade and power forward Matthew Fitzgerald earned all-tournament honors.

Senior captain Li Wu Ying had a very strong year at the center position. He made the jump from thirds basketball team to the JV squad and led the team in rebounding and fouls committed. Matt Fitzgerald had a great final year of St. Thomas More basketball. This was his second consecutive year on the JV team. Matt was a strong defensive leader and an offensive player that could always be counted on to move without the ball. Alex Kolpan led the team in three-point field goals and was one of the hardest working players on the team. Tristan Peacock led the team in double-doubles and one on one defensive intensity. Steven Greenslade missed a good portion of the year due to injury but made strong contributions with rebounds, blocks, and long distance shooting. Juwon Grant, the team's only eighth grader, led the team in scoring throughout most of the year. Grant hit an unbelievable game-tieing floater to send the second match against the Masters School into overtime. Kris Carroll and Eddie Guilbert did a nice job in the backcourt. Each player had big moments that helped the Chancellors throughout the season. Sami Ahmed, a late addition to the team, led with a steady hand from the point guard position. Yuhong Qui and Evan Chen made up a strong front-court bench unit. Paul Daniels and Ryan Lopes contributed key minutes throughout the season. Harry Li, who was pulled up from the Thirds team, played his way into the regular rotation. Harry logged important minutes during the final tournament, and he figures to be a prominent member of the St. Thomas More JV basketball team next year. Our manager, Wongani Jere, led the team in stat recording and sideline fashion sense.

It was an honor and a pleasure to coach the JV basketball team. We were involved in some exciting matches this season, and we know that everyone had fun. We look forward to having players return next year and to seeing some move up to the varsity team.

Varsity Hockey Season Wrap-Up

03/19/12
By Coach Savioli

The 2011-2012 Season has come and gone with many ups and downs with the team finishing 6-11. The Chancellors fans have a lot to look forward to in the future. They will be returning eight players from this year's roster. This prospect has Coach Alex Savioli and Coach John Healy extremely excited.

At the beginning of the school year, the Chancellors had a question mark at the goaltending position. As Thanksgiving Break approached it became apparent that they had their man in Michelangelo Federici. A postgraduate from Cumberland, RI, he was looking to prove a lot after being passed over by many college and junior teams during following senior season. Often facing 40 or more shots in a night the net-minder faced quite a challenge. He worked hard and maintained a positive approach throughout. Michaelangelo will be attending training camp for Eastern Junior Hockey League powerhouse Boston Junior Bruins where he will look to make an immediate impact.

Seniors led the team both from a production and a leadership standpoint. Carmine Totillo, who led the team in points and NEPSAC Division 1 in points per game with 3.06, has been invited to training camp next summer for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Moncton Wildcats. Karl Manhardt was also played a large role in the success of this year's team. In the fall he was asked to move to defense to give the team a little more depth at the blue line, and he did that and much more. He was second in scoring among defensemen and was an anchor on both the power play and penalty kill. He will be attending Sacred Heart University where he will play for one of the top College Club Hockey programs in the nation. Louis Prion was more a role player, who when a play was needed or penalty to be killed he was on the ice. He contributed in a lot of the little ways which are not measured in statistics. Louis is still undecided as to his future plans. The final senior, Dan Gauthier, came to the program three years ago with no hockey experience in his background. During the last two years he pushed himself and others around him to improve to the point where he finished this season on the third line. Dan scored the game winning goal in the team's 7-1 victory over St. Luke's School. He set an example for the younger players with his leadership, dedication and determination. Dan will be attending Salve Regina University where he plans to play lacrosse. These four young men will be missed, as all were great role models and leaders. We wish all four nothing but the best in the future.

The junior class was be led by Joseph Posillico and Brad Thompson, who each arrived near midseason making immediate impacts. Brad played both offense and defense and was stellar at both while Joseph was the quintessential "Brad Marchand" type of player, always hustling and scrapping. Another member of the returning junior class is Oleg Deyle. Oleg is a hardworking young man who improved everyday throughout the season. All three will be looked upon for the leadership and dedication provided by the outgoing senior class.

Further optimism is provided by the likes of sophomores Alek Burgess, Zach Goodman, Osvaldo Borrero, and freshman George Hanson all returning next year with a year of experience under their belts. Alek will bring a much more physical aspect to his game as he continues to grow, which will help his line mate Ozzie Borrero do what he does best, finish. The potential for Zach and George is very high. This year they were called upon in clutch situations to make big plays in the defensive end. The expectations of them for next year will be that they take their games to the next level.

The Chancellors and their coaches thank all the families, friends, faculty and staff for being such great fans and all look forward to next season with great anticipation.

Varsity Basketball Season Wrap-up

By Coach Hastings

03/16/12

The 2011-2012 Season began slowly for the varsity Chancellors.  Three great opponents (Master's, Wheeler and Pomfret) challenged the inexperienced team.  With only four returning players led by starters Allante Crocker and Matt Midder, the team struggled to perform up to its capacity.  Javon Thorbourne, another senior returner, had early season surgery which kept him out until after the Christmas break.  The team hit their stride at midseason, beating rivals Williams and Christian Heritage.  Several members contributed significantly during a seven game winning streak.  Qadeer Morgan and Rob Marino led the team in rebounding over the streak while scorers Colin Roberts and Javon Thorbourne began to come into their own.  Others stepped into significant roles with an increase in playing time while filling in those out with injuries.  In particular, Jason Choi and Iriquoi Reels filled in and started several games helping the Chancellors earn a number two seed in the SENE Tournament.

During February Break, the team was forced to play slightly shorthanded.  Led by the four returning seniors, Crocker, Midder, Thorbourne and Brandon Lewis, along with Roberts and Reels the team put up quite a battle for the much deeper team from Wheeler.  The game was highly competitive throughout but the depth and hot shooting of the visitors proved to be too much for the Chancellors to over come in the end.

The team finished with a 13-10 record good for a second place finish in the SENE Regular Season.  Awards winners include Allante Crocker, Javon Thorbourne, Brandon Lewis, Colin Roberts and Matt Midder for their dedication and work ethic throughout the season.  Coaches Hastings and Rutherford appreciate all the team’s efforts and dedication.  The seniors include Allante Crocker, Javon Thorbourne, Brandon Lewis, Matt Midder, Jason Choi and Junbo Luan.  They each will be moving on to continue their education and we with them nothing but the best in the future.

PB BB Season Wrap-up

By Coach T. Bushnell

03/16/12

The 2011-12 PG basketball team enjoyed yet another successful season with Coach Jere Quinn at the helm for a 34th year. This year's team took the STM faithful on quite a ride. The Chancellors finished with a record of 28-8, while reaching the NEPSAC AAA Championship game before falling to Northfield-Mount Hermon 74-70; the Chancellors' reign as National Champions came to an end against Notre Dame Prep in the national quarterfinals.

The STM PG's began the year with a blistering 15-0 start to the campaign, winning both games in the National Prep Showcase, coming from 19 down in the 2nd half at South Kent thanks to the torrid shooting of Torin Childs-Harris, and defeating Chancellors' alum and former coach Matt Quinn and his Winchendon squad. The early season success can be attributed to terrific team play and the consummate leadership of New Zealand native Stuart McEwen; unfortunately for the St. Thomas More community, Stu left for Old

Dominion University at Christmas break. Following two tough losses after returning from vacation, the Chancellors righted the ship and stood at 7-1 in league play and 24-3 overall by the end of January. Philly native Ky Howard, Delaware born A.J. English, New Jersey's Rodney Sanders, and Manhattan College-bound Curtis Jones, just to name a few, helped pick up the slack in McEwen's absence.

The PG hoops squad entertained the crowd with a fast-paced, high octane offense that often featured four or five guards on the court at the same time. When STM decided to go big, they went BIG- with 7'2'' Chier Ajou anchoring the post and Taylor Mulvey and Michael Rudy coming off the bench. Alongside Jones at the point guard spot, South Alabama-commit Barrington Stevens dazzled spectators with as quick a first step and crossover that the Charles Hanrahan Gymnasium has ever witnessed. His full court drive and lefty floater at the buzzer to beat New Hampton in the NEPSAC semifinals proved to be the ultimate highlight of the year. Denzel Gregg, the lone underclassman on the team, impressed with his athleticism, energy, and baseline alley-oops. His experience, leadership and ability will be heavily relied on next year. Harlem native James Outlaw provided some big minutes off the bench during the last road trip as well, as the Chancellors made their final push toward the postseason.

A.J. English earned NEPSAC 2nd team all-conference honors, while Ky Howard and Rodney Sanders were honorable mention. The postgraduate basketball team would like to thank the students, faculty, staff, administration and fans for making the 2011-12 season successful and full of memorable moments.

Thirds Basketball Season Wrap-Up

By Coach J. Bushnell

03/13/12

The Saint Thomas More School thirds team basketball season was very successful. With a final record of four wins and six losses, one might be inclined to think the team was average at best, but this assumption could not be further from the truth. In reality, four of the six games that were lost were by five points or less, and two of the losses came in overtime after finishing regulation time in a tie. Although thirds basketball finished below a .500 win percentage, the numbers do not accurately depict the story of the season.

Over the course of the season the players evolved into a cohesive team unit with the ability to seriously challenge every team it came up against. Foul shooting improved dramatically over the course of the season, and players like Roger Luo, Harry Li, Kaseen Colebut, and Colan Wang consistently made essential free throws. Rebounding was another area of the game where the Chancellors needed to improve. Freshman Mike Morgan, a relative newcomer to the game, was able to use his size and athleticism to dominate the boards and play as either a center or power forward. Kenny Wu, typically a guard, was asked halfway through the season to learn how to play a new position and he did so quite well, demonstrating his athletic ability in the process.

There were also a number of bench players that played essential roles in the success of the team. Late arrivals Mo Chen and Jie Wang provided some welcome depth at the position of shooting guard. Freshman Gordon Liang came off the bench as the backup point guard and used his tremendous speed and agility to beat opposing players. Prosper Jeanphillipe, a fan favorite at home games, started a few games and was often called in off the bench as an impact player.

Top Scorers:

Harry Li – 99 points

Kaseen Colebut – 60 points

Roger Luo – 54 points

Colan Wang – 47 points

Gordon Liang – 27 points

Mike Morgan – 24 points
