Alumni Memorial Day, '11-'12

On Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011, the STM Varsity Hockey held their 1st Annual Alumni Memorial Day. The day began with Alumni Blue just hanging on to a 6-4 win over Alumni White. Alumni Blue captained by Coach Alex Savioli, '03 came out very strong with a 4-1 lead after 2 periods, but Coach John Healy and Alumni White did not give up easily. They battled back but could not come away with a victory. Both Paul Knudsen, '11 and Craig Shea, '11 played very well and made key saves in net. Alumni Blue had key contributions from Erikk Mannard, Alex Smith, '07 and Joe Ferris, '07. Alumni White who was stacked full of young alumni was lead by last year’s Varsity team captain and leading scorer James Newman, '11, Matt McCarthy, '11, Remy Menard, '09, David Sikorski, '06 and Kevin Howard, '11.
After the alumni game the teams gathered at the Holiday Inn in Norwich to catch up over some nice appetizers and a Bruins game.
Following the brief reception the Alumni gathered to watch the Varsity Chancellors take on Hamden Hall. The Chancellors fell to Hamden Hall 6-3 just a few weeks ago in their season opener so they were looking to come out strong and jump on Hamden Hall right from the puck drop. The games scoring got started by newcomer Ozzie Barrero who has been a huge pick up for the Chancellors with 9 points in just 2 games with the team. The 1st period ended with Louis Prion adding another goal to make the lead 2-0 Chancellors. The 2nd period was a bit shaky for the Chancellors. Even though they finished the period with a 6-2 lead, Coach Savioli was looking for more consistent play from his top line. The 3rd period was a bit of a battle as Hamden Hall came out of the intermission scoring a few quick goals that put the Chancellors back on their heels. But the top line of Barrero, Carmine Totillo (who finished the game with 3 goals and 4 assists), and Alek Burgess finished off Hamden Hall 10-5. The Chancellors will leave for Christmas break with a 3-2 record and hope to continue their winning streak in 2012.
The Chancellors will be off until January 11, 2012 when they will face Kingswood Oxford in West Hartford @2:30.
