Student Group Sets Big Goals For Community Involvement

As a student at St. Thomas More School, club activity is not always school centered. The Together Impacting & Empowering Society (T.I.E.S.) club has its sights set on community service. This group, led by faculty member Jonathan Hastings, with assistance from Thomas Bushnell, Locke Haman, and Alex Savioli '03, teaches the importance of community service, and offering a helping hand.

"So far this year, we have helped with the cleaning of Hope Mead State Park and assisted at a cross country running invitational for the elementary and middle schools in Groton. However, our most notable event this fall was helping to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Connecticut. This was very special as we also volunteered at their event, ‘Light the Night' so we could honor Henry Tighe, the son of our English Department Head, Jason Tighe," explained Mr. Hastings. Henry is a survivor for the last five years.

Over the past three years, T.I.E.S. has held fundraisers for organizations, such as Multiple Sclerosis Society, Make a Wish Foundation of Connecticut, and Pennies For Peace, an organization the builds houses in Afghanistan for young females that have not had the opportunity for formal education. This year, the group has plans to work with The Special Olympics and Habitat for Humanity.
