The Chancellors came out strong in the second half and and a back-and-forth battle ensued. However, the team's hard work and determination were not enough to close the deal against the Vikings. Kris Carroll had the hot hand for the Chancellors scoring a season high 15 points. Li Wu Yang and Tristan Peacock also played well with for a combined total of 14 rebounds. Coach Leavens and Coach P. Quinn are certain that this team will bounce back and come out just as strong against Wheeler this coming Tuesday.

Rocky Hill 7, STM Varsity Soccer 1

10/12/11

On Wednesday the Chancellors traveled to Rocky Hill, Rhode Island, in a highly anticipated match that took place on the windy coast of Narragansett Bay. The Chancellors began the game with some strong offense attacks, probing Rocky Hill’s defense. Rocky Hill were the first to strike, however, and the first goal turned out to be decisive. The Rocky Hill offense began to click, ultimately putting seven goals past the STM defense. In the middle of the second half STM forward Nebay Ahmed took a precision cross down with his chest and turned to volley across the face of goal and into the net in what could be an early nomination for goal of the season. The final score on the day was 7-1 in favor of Rocky Hill.

Hyde School 4, STM Varsity Soccer 0

10/06/11

The Chancellors lost for the second time in two weeks to the Hyde school on Thursday. Although the boys held Hyde’s vicious attack off for the entire first half, the Hyde forwards began to chip away at the exhausted STM defenders. The Chancellors were missing two starters due to injury, and as a result had a very short bench. Nevertheless, they put in a noble performance against an opponent that had previously beaten them, ultimately losing by a final score of 4-0.

STM Varsity Soccer 7, St. Andrew's 2

The Chancellors cruised to a comfortable 7-2 victory over Saint Andrew’s on Tuesday. Chan Young Lee opened the scoring in the 9th minute. The Chancellor’s superior possession paid off again in the 13th minute when Junbo Luan notched his second goal of the season. St. Andrews halved the deficit in the nineteenth minute, but back-to-back goals from Sami Ahmed and Hyo Kun Yoo in the 25th and 26th minute put the game out of reach. In the second half, late strikes from Hyo Kun Yoo helped him complete his hat trick five minutes from the final whistle.

STM Varsity Soccer 11,  Oxford Academy 1

10/2/11

St. Thomas More School cruised to an 11-1 victory at home against Oxford on Wednesday. Goals from Oleg Deyle, Sami Ahmed, Hyo Kyun Yoo, Matt Midder , Chan Young Lee and Junbo Luan guided the Chancellors to a comfortable win. A halftime switch allowed Oleg Deyle to get some time in goal while Matt Midder added some goals to his tremendous start to the season.

Wheeler School 6, STM Varsity Soccer 0

09/28/11

The St. Thomas More School varsity soccer team fell to a strong Wheeler side 0-6 on Tuesday, September 27th. Although the Chancellor's had a few chances to get back into the game, finding the back of the net proved difficult. Wheeler controlled the majority of the possession, keeping STM on the back foot for the majority of the match. Their offensive build up began to bear fruit with two goals early in the first half, and St. Thomas More found themselves unable to ans

Hyde School 6, STM Varsity Soccer 2

09/27/11

The Chancellors were defeated 6-2 by a strong Hyde team in their first league match of the season. Although the score was only 2-0 at half, Saint Thomas More failed to control the midfield and were unfortunately outplayed by a much hungrier squad. Over the course of eighty minutes goalkeeper Matt Midder made many terrific saves but the team could not keep the Hyde attack at bay. Oleg Deyle took a fantastic cross off his chest and fired into the top corner to give the Saint Thomas More a glimmer of hope, but a quick Hyde goal all but sealed the win for the home team. A late effort from sophomore Sami Ahmed gave the Chancellors one more goal on the day, and the match finished 6-2.

STM Varsity Soccer 7, Cheshire Academy 4

09/22/11

A glorious game, indeed!

The St. Thomas More varsity soccer team emerged as the victors in their home opener against a strong Cheshire Academy team. The Chancellors went up early from a fine strike from Sami Ahmed and eventually doubled their lead with a terrific finish from midfielder Nebay Ahmed. A fine effort by the talented Cheshire forwards halved the deficit before the break. The Chancellors began the second half with heart and went on a scoring rampage. Although Cheshire put a few more goals on the board, Saint Thomas More rallied and doused any chance of a comeback from the away team, capped by a stunning free kick from junior Oleg Deyle. The young midfielder sent a curling effort from a free kick deep in the midfield well past the keeper and into the top corner, ending his afternoon with two assists and an absolutely stunning goal. An eventual hat-trick from Nebay Ahmed was complemented by goals from Chan Young Lee and Junbo Luan. Although the formidable Cheshire team threatened time and again, goalkeeper Matt Midder put in yet another tremendous performance between the sticks, saving eleven shots by the time the final whistle blew, signaling the end of a 7-4 thriller in favor of the home team.

STM vs. Wilbraham Monson Academy Scrimmage

09/20/11

This past Saturday the St. Thomas More Chancellor football team traveled to Wilbraham, Massachusetts for a scrimmage with the Wilbraham Monson Titans. Although an official score wasn’t kept, St. Thomas More played very well. The Chancellors were led by Post Graduate quarterback, John Cianci (Avon, CT) who started off his first drive with a touchdown pass to fellow PG, Tre Wilson of Stamford, CT. Running Back, Tyler Girard of Montville, CT also scored a rushing touchdown behind the hard-nosed offensive line anchored by Malik Edwards. The Chancellors defense led by linebacker Khalil Whestone was very stingy, only giving up two big plays to the Titans of Wilbraham. This Saturday, The Chancellors travel to Washington, CT to play The Gunnery School. Gunnery is well improved over last year and looks to be STM’s first major test.

Marianapolis 2, St. Thomas More School 0

9/20/11

The St. Thomas More School varsity soccer team opened their season away from home against a talented Marianapolis team. Although the Chancellors played valiantly, they lost two-nil in what was a thrilling match. The defense, led by Ja’mhar Comena, held off the aggressive Marianapolis attacks. Junior Oleg Deyle anchored the midfield and teamed up with sophomore Sami Ahmed to lead the Chancellor counter-attacks while senior Junbo Luan was able to shake off a nagging injury in time to valiantly play behind the forward for the entire eighty minutes. Although two goals were conceded over the course of the match, Senior Matthew Midder put in an amazing debut as goalkeeper and stopped some terrific shots, keeping the Chancellor’s hopes alive. The Chancellors showed tremendous promise in their season opener against a very difficult opponent and were slightly unlucky not to score.

West Haven 7, STM Ice Hockey 3

Norwich, CT - Head Coach Alex Savioli, '03 and Assistant Coach John Healy led the Chancellor hockey team as they opened their season with a scrimmage against the defending Connecticut State Champion West Haven High School.  The Chancellors played a hard fought game but fell to West Haven 7-3.  Louis Prion, '12 scored the first goal for the Chancellors off a rebound. James Newman, '11 followed Prion's goal with a 4 on 4  breakaway goal. Late in the game, Javon Ratlif, '11 scored on a screaming slap shot from the blue line to bring the Chancellors within two. Karl Mandhart, '12 played very well on both sides of the puck while Nick Dimare, '11, Paul Knudsen, '11 and Craig Shea, '11 all split solid periods between the pipes.  The Chancellors still have a few kinks to work out in this early part of their season but they certainly showed quite a bit of skill, heart and tenacity on the ice this past Wednesday.  Although handed the loss, STM was certainly the more physical team on the day. You can catch the Chancellor Hockey team on the road this weekend. STM will head down to Hamden Hall on Saturday, December 4th, 2010 at 5:45pm.

Terrell Williams, '10 to play football for AIC

 By CHRIS MASCARO
chris.mascaro@newsday.com

Terrell Williams, the 2008 Thorp Award winner from Hempstead, has signed to play football for American International College this fall.

Williams, 19, spent last year at St. Thomas More preparatory school in Oakdale, Conn., where the running back worked on his grades in order to attain NCAA eligibility. He was named Post-Graduate athlete of the year at the school after successful football, basketball and lacrosse campaigns, and he made the Honor Roll for the third and fourth marking periods.

"He's really made good strides in the classroom," said AIC offensive coordinator Dave Beaudin. "That, more than anything, shows the light bulb's gone on."

For his efforts on the gridiron, which included touchdown runs of 78 and 63 yards, Williams was named All New England Prep Class C.

At Hempstead, Williams set nine school records, including career touchdowns (42) and all-purpose yards (4,799). In 2008, the do-it-all talent had five runs of 50+ yards, four return touchdowns (two kickoffs, one interception and a fumble recovery), five receiving touchdowns and 61 tackles as he became the sixth Hempstead player to win the Thorp Award (given to Nassau's most outstanding player).

Division I schools such as UConn, Syracuse and Maryland showed interest in Williams, but he said their pursuit waned during his year in prep school.

"It's my fault because I wasn't really focused," said Williams, who added he's gained about 20 pounds of muscle to the 190-pound frame he sported his senior season. "I got my head screwed on now. It doesn't matter where you go as long as you have the work ethic."

Though Williams holds tight the dream of playing at a big-time college program, and even in the NFL eventually, he said he is content with his choice to play at the Division II school in Springfield, Mass.

"My dream is to make it to the NFL, but if that doesn't work out, I have to make sure I get a good education," he said. "A few people told me how good the school was, and I fell in love with it."

Williams will likely make his Long Island homecoming on Sept. 11 when AIC visits Stony Brook - another school that showed interest in him. AIC opens its training camp on Aug. 10.

AIC's September 23rd game at Southern Connecticut State University will be televised nationwide on CBS College Sports Network and kickoff at 8 p.m. AIC posted a record of 5-5 last season and finished seventh in the Northeast-10 with a 3-5 conference record after going 9-2 in 2008, a year in which the Yellow Jackets won the NE-10 with a perfect 7-0 record in conference play.

Ryan Brahm, '10

Written by Josh MacDonald
(STM Baseball Coach & Former University of Connecticut Pitcher)

This season the campus on the lake has received a tremendous gift in the arrival of Ryan Brahm, ‘10. Ryan came to St Thomas More needing a year to prepare for college and to decide whether he would play football or baseball. While Ryan showed the skill, determination, and work ethic to play football at the next level, he settled on advancing to college as a baseball player.

Ryan has done an excellent job this season for Chancellors. He has shown his versatility and selflessness this season by doing whatever was asked of him on the diamond. Ryan has played primarily Catcher and Pitcher for the Chancellors this season yet he will play Center field in the collegiate ranks. Ryan has been the catalyst for our team all season. His defense is one of the best in the league whether in the Outfield or behind the plate. He has terrorized opposing pitchers in the lead-off spot while frightening the catchers in our league with his tremendous speed on the base paths. Ryan has been a quiet leader, leading by example and being a great role model for our younger players.

Ryan has chosen to attend The University of Connecticut - Avery Point next season and will play under renowned baseball coach Roger Bidwell. Ryan will have a great future in whatever he partakes, we are just happy he decided to stop at St. Thomas More School first! Congratulations Ryan and Good Luck.

Marianapolis Homecoming Meet

10/17/09

On October 17th, a brisk autumn day, the St. Thomas More Varsity Cross Country team competed in Marianapolis Preparatory School’s Homecoming Cross Country Meet. Coaches Allen and Kearney entered 7 Chancellors that day. Placing first for the team was senior Leo Lin, with a reduced, yet consistent, time of 21 minutes and 26 seconds (21:26). Fellow senior Frank “the Tank” Martinez stole second with a time of 22 minutes even. Sophomore Jaquontee Sebastian sliced over two minutes off of his previous time, finishing with an impressive 24:36. In similar fashion, eighth grader Gavin Morrison made tremendous strides, improving his original time on the course of 38:24 to a noteworthy 29:32. Continuous reductions in time, such as these, indicate that, despite the cold weather, the cross country season is merely warming up!

PCD Meet

10/21/09

High temperatures and dark skies hung over East Providence, RI on Wednesday, October 21st, the day that the St. Thomas More Varsity Cross Country team was to contend for victory in the Providence Country Day School’s Co-Ed Meet. The Chancellors, already pumped with adrenaline, were to race not only with Varsity Boys, but also with Varsity Girls. And what a grand showing it was! Returning senior Leo Lin, our Usain Bolt, recorded a new best time of 20 minutes and 19 seconds (20:19), leaving his time from the last season in the dust. Jason Lou and Frank Martinez held down second and third place with times of, respectively, 21:31 and 21:56. After a brief sabbatical from running, newcomer Bruno Vaccarezza stunned the coaches with his record time of 22:06. It wouldn’t be a fun race for Jaquontee Sebastian if he didn’t reduce his time, and this meet proved no different; his final time of 24:05 was 31 seconds faster than during the previous meet. Whether it was the presence of female athletes or the joyful result of hard work, one thing is certain – the Chancellors always bring it!

After playing for the Chancellor Post Graduate basketball team during the 2007-2008 campaign, Devin went on to star at the University of West Virginia from 2008-2010.  Some career highlights for Devin include being named to the All-Big East Third Team in his Sophomore year, His 273 rebounds are the second most in school history by a Freshman and he was one of 30 high school players to be invited to the USA Basketball Development Festival in 2007 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO where he averaged just over 28 points and just under 5 rebounds per game.  Also, this past season Devin helped the West Virginia Mountaineers to the 2010 Final Four where they came up just short against the eventual National Champion Duke Blue Devils.  It is truly a proud day for the St. Thomas More Family and CONGRATULATIONS to Devin Ebanks!
